Levy Product

The levy product is used to add MUP charges as child line items in customer carts when products are priced below the minimum unit price.

What is the Levy Product?

When a customer adds an alcohol product that's priced below the MUP floor, the cart transform function automatically adds a "MUP Levy" line item to bring the price up to the legal minimum.

The levy product is the product used for these charge line items.

Creating the Levy Product

  1. Go to MUP Settings in the app
  2. Find the "Levy Product Variant ID" field
  3. Click "Create Levy Product" button
  4. Wait for confirmation

The app automatically creates: - Product Title: "MUP Levy" - Product Handle: "mup-levy" - Product Type: "Fee" - Tags: mup, levy, compliance, scotland - Status: Published to Online Store

The variant ID is automatically saved to your settings.

Manual Creation

If you prefer to create the product manually:

  1. Go to Products in Shopify Admin
  2. Create a new product
  3. Set title to "MUP Levy" (or your preferred name)
  4. Set product type to "Fee" or "Service"
  5. Publish to Online Store sales channel
  6. Copy the variant ID
  7. Paste it into MUP SettingsLevy Product Variant ID

Requirements

The levy product must:

  • ✅ Be published to the Online Store sales channel
  • ✅ Be active (not draft or archived)
  • ✅ Have at least one variant
  • ✅ Be set to "Continue selling when out of stock" (recommended)

How It Works

  1. Customer adds alcohol product to cart
  2. Cart transform checks if price per unit < MUP floor
  3. If yes, adds levy as child line item:
  4. Uses the levy product variant
  5. Sets price to the difference needed
  6. Adds attributes: mup: true, parent_line_id, etc.
  7. Customer sees both:
  8. Original product at its price
  9. MUP Levy line item with the additional charge

Viewing Levy Charges

Customers will see levy charges in:

  • Cart page: As a separate line item
  • Checkout: In the order summary
  • Order confirmation: Included in the order total

Troubleshooting

Levy not being added? - Verify levy product is published to Online Store - Check that variant ID is correct in settings - Ensure MUP enforcement is enabled - Verify customer has selected Scotland as region

Levy product not found? - Check that product is not archived - Verify it's published to Online Store sales channel - Ensure variant exists and is active

Wrong levy amount? - Check minimum unit price setting - Verify product has correct total_units metafield - Review cart transform logs for calculation details
